HCS Families- Earth Day is Thursday, 4/23! We'd love your help if you're interested in volunteering. Please let the front office know if you'd like to join. You're welcome to volunteer for the whole event or just during your student's time. All activities are outdoors.

PK-2nd grade: 9:30-11:00
3rd-5th grade: 12:05-2:30
6th-8th grade: Helping throughout the day

It's going to be a beautiful day, so bring a hat, come celebrate, and have fun with your student!

We believe students learn best when they have opportunities to connect with the world around them. This week, with the lovely weather, our students enjoyed time in our outdoor classroom for a little outdoor learning, stillness, and the chance to warm themselves by the fire. Experiences like these are part of what makes Hood Canal School such a unique and special place. We are grateful to be able to offer learning opportunities that help students grow, explore, and connect with nature.

We had a great day celebrating local food and community connections with a delicious birria lunch made with Colvin Ranch ground beef! Students not only enjoyed a fantastic meal, but also had the opportunity to meet Jennifer Colvin, a fifth-generation rancher from Colvin Ranch. This marked our district’s first purchase of locally sourced beef from the ranch, and it was a meaningful way to connect what’s on our plates to the people and places right here in our region. Through the WSDA Local Purchasing Grant, we’re able to bring more Washington-grown, raised, produced, fished, and foraged foods into our school meals. This work strengthens our food service program while also helping students better understand the community that produces their food. Reminder! 🥧 Title I Family Pi (Math) Night is tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11 from 4:30–6:00 PM at Hood Canal School. Join us for a fun evening of family math games and a free Shepherd’s Pie dinner. Come learn, laugh, and spend time together as a school community. We hope to see you there!

💙💚 It’s Seahawks Day at Hood Canal! 💚💙. Tomorrow (Thursday) is Seahawks Day at Hood Canal School! Students are encouraged to wear blue, green, or Seahawks gear for a special pep assembly.

We’ll also be giving away some Seahawks swag that the team sent us — thank you, ‘Hawks! 🏈

Plus, we’ll be forming a giant “12” in the commons and taking a photo to send to the team as a big Orca thank-you. 📸

🎭✨ What a Night! ✨🎭 Our evening drama production of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas… Kinda.” was an absolute delight! The audience loved it, and our students did a wonderful job bringing this fun, original show to life. A huge thank you to Director Anne Riener and Megan Smith for their creativity, guidance, and support of our young performers. 🌿 Our BYRDS Outdoor Education class had a great trip yesterday to Mclane Creek Nature Trail and the Mima Mounds! The weather turned out perfect, and students had a fantastic day exploring the trails, observing nature, and learning outside the classroom. Experiences like these are what BYRDS is all about—hands-on learning, curiosity, and connection to the natural world. 💚🌲

Students from our Kiwanis Builders Club stepped up once again—this time helping distribute food at the Hoodsport Food Bank ahead of this holiday. We’re proud of these young leaders for giving their time, energy, and hearts to support our community. 💙🤝🛒 Special thanks to advisors Mr. Max and Ms. Queen for making these opportunities possible. A huge thank you to our amazing community partners!Last weekend, we delivered 29 uncooked holiday meal kits—generously donated by Hood Canal Market Fresh plus another 16 fully cooked meals prepared by New Community Church of Union, all for our Hood Canal families. 💛 A special shout-out to our counselor Monica Carlson who coordinated this amazing project and to the volunteers, students and staff members who helped her organze and deliver meals. On this Thanksgiving Day, we’re especially grateful for the people and partnerships that make Hood Canal School such a special place. To our students, families, staff, Tribal partners, and the many individuals and community organizations who support our work—you make a tremendous difference. Your generosity, collaboration, and care help our students learn, grow, and feel connected. We are also grateful for the place we call home—the land, waters, and rich cultural traditions of the Skokomish Indian Tribe. This connection grounds our work and reminds us of the generations who have cared for this land long before us. As we each celebrate in our own ways—sharing meals, reconnecting with loved ones, or taking time for reflection—we hope today brings peace, warmth, and moments of joy. Our Builders Club (service club) students really stepped up today! 🙌They jumped in to help our Drama students build their sets and even painted a fantastic “brick wall” that will be featured in the upcoming holiday show. 🇺🇸 Honoring Our Veterans at Hood Canal School 🇺🇸 A heartfelt thank-you to the VFW of Shelton for joining us at our Veterans Day assembly and presenting the colors with such dignity and respect. We’re especially grateful to Retired Master Sergeant Denis Leverage for serving as our guest speaker and sharing his inspiring message with our students. 🐟 Exploring the Estuary! 🌿 Our 7th and 3rd graders teamed up for an awesome field trip to the Bayshore Preserve and estuary! Students got to see salmon in action—spawning, breeding, and completing their life cycle—while exploring the ecosystem up close. They also played the food web game and discovered how every creature plays an important part in keeping the environment healthy. Hands-on learning, teamwork, and lots of curiosity made it a day to remember! 💚
