Safety First at Hood Canal School! The Skokomish Police Department and Washington State Patrol met with HCS safety personnel to plan our upcoming Cushman Dam Breach & Flood Evacuation Drill.
Together, weโre preparing to practice safely moving our entire school to higher ground in the event of an emergency. Weโre proud to work side by side with our local and state partners to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

This week, 7th and 8th graders in Ms. Akiyamaโs class explored the diet and ecosystem of barn owls by dissecting owl pellets! ๐ฆ Students carefully identified rodent species and examined different bones, sparking great academic discussions as they pieced together clues from their findings. Awesome focus and curiosity on display! ๐๐ฆด

๐ธ Happy May Day! ๐ธ Today, our bilingual students embraced the spirit of May Day by crafting and delivering beautiful flower bouquets to our dedicated staff members throughout the school. Their heartfelt gestures brought smiles and a touch of springtime cheer to everyoneโs day. Weโre proud of our students for participating in these meaningful traditions, fostering community spirit and cultural appreciation. ๐






๐๐งฅ Each year, our 8th grade class designs and sells custom hoodies to celebrate their final year at Hood Canal School! Thanks to generous donations, our 8th graders receive theirs for free ๐โbut anyone can buy one!
๐ Hoodies are $35 each and available in sizes XS to XXXL.

๐ A huge thank you to Alderbrook Resort & Spa for hosting our Builders Club students (sponsored by Hood Canal Kiwanis) for a special end-of-year celebration! ๐
Our students were wowed by the beautiful facilities and grounds, enjoyed some beachcombing, and loved walking along the dock. ๐๏ธ๐ถโโ๏ธ
They also had a wonderful meal at the restaurant, where the server took time to teach them about fine dining etiquette โ including which fork to use and how to navigate the place settings. ๐ฝ๏ธโจ
It was a fantastic day of learning, celebrating, and making memories. Thank you again, Alderbrook! ๐

๐ We celebrated Earth Day in spectacular weather today, and our students had a terrific time outdoors! โ๏ธ๐ฟ
The event was led by Ms. Akiyama in partnership with the Natural Resources Department of Skokomish Indian Tribe, and kicked off with a beautiful opening ceremony featuring a song by Skokomish students and tribal members.
Students took part in a wide range of hands-on learning activities, including:
๐ฑ Removing invasive species from trails
๐จ Creating cards using plant prints
๐ฝ๏ธ Tasting foods made from native plants
๐ฆ Learning about invasive green crabs in Hood Canal
๐ง Exploring pH levels and water quality
๐พ Identifying local plants
โฆand so much more!
It was a meaningful day of learning, culture, and communityโthank you to numerous volunteers and staff who made this special event possible! ๐๐

One 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade small group at Hood Canal had an egg-citing day of learning! ๐ฅโจ Students started with an Easter egg word hunt, searching for hidden eggs filled with r-controlled vowel words like โafterโ and โsister.โ Afterward, they put their sequencing skills to the test by filling in the missing ingredients for Rice Krispy treat eggs ๐๐ฌโthen followed the directions to make their own! ๐งโ๐ณ๐ฃ
Their classroom motto is: โYou have to do the hard stuff before you do the fun stuffโโand today they got to do both!

What a game! Our 2025 Students vs. Staff Basketball Showdown was one for the books!
